Our first Fado evening

. . . .and what a superb evening it was.  Cuca Roseta was in Olhao wpid-20150321_174547.jpgjust for the one evening, and we thought we would try as the adverts and reviews all said that Cuca is amazing.  So glad we did – her voice is incredible, and at times spell-binding.

Fado emerged in the 19th century in the back streets of port towns in Portugal, and is known as the soul of Portugal.  Fado is about life and in particular life’s struggles, human longing and betrayal in love. The Portuguese word for this is “saudade”, and it was very evident last night.  We might not have understood the words but we certainly through the music, Cuca’s singing and presentation felt the emotions of longing, betrayal, love and destiny.

Taken from Cuca's facebook page - she says of this "Aqui estou eu pronta para entrar no Auditório de Olhão! Sala esgotadíssima wink emoticon um beijinho!"

Cuca, who has been described as the ‘new voice of fado’ apparently only started singing fado when she was 18, but since then it seems to have become her passion.

“O fado foi uma coisa que nunca me interessou, que eu não conhecia. Nós somos portugueses, mas não conhecemos a nossa própria música. E quando eu fico a conhecer esta música, há uma ligação e uma paixão que me faz pensar que eu quero cantar fado o resto da vida”

To find out more about Cuca visit her facebook page, or pop across to YouTube and enjoy her singing.

Cuca was accompanied by three musicians last night, all on guitar of which one was the classical Portuguese guitar  – guitarra – and the other two acoustic.  At one point Cuca handed over to the three musicians, and for about 15 minutes we were treated to some amazing music.  All three were great, but the one on guitarra was superb. Unfortunately though I can’t recall their names – apologies!

It was a fabulous evening at the Auditório de Olhão, and for us a stunning introduction to Fado. Thank you Cuca.

It had been a good life walking, cooking, photographing, volunteering, blogging, and best of all spending time with MrB, family, & friends. Sadly it is no longer what it was, as suddenly and unexpectedly I became a widow.

  1. You’ve been busy! Sorry- I had meant to visit you on here too, but some weeks just zip past, don’t they? Glad you enjoyed the fado. The atmosphere created can be incredible. I’ll watch out for this young lady. 🙂
