The Last Day of Christmas

In England many households will have had or will  be beginning their usual debate about Twelfth Night and whether or not the Christmas decorations come down tonight or tomorrow. Here in the Algarve it would seem the 6th January is the last day. The Twelve Days of Christmas retain a Christian focus through the presépio in every village and town, and most of them are still open to viewing tomorrow.  So if you have not yet seen one you have a day left, and we would certainly recommend spending tomorrow visiting one.

We’ve enjoyed our visits over the past few weeks, and whilst none have been quite as splendid as the Presépio Gigante in Vila Real de Santo António all of the ones we have stumbled across have been delightful and in some cases there is the bonus of entering buildings you cannot normally enter.

We particularly enjoyed the one in Olhão’s library.  It is unusual in that it is a personal collection of nativity scenes from around the world. These photographs are of just a few from the collection.

Do hope wherever you were and whatever you were doing this Christmas that it brought as a smile to your face.

It had been a good life walking, cooking, photographing, volunteering, blogging, and best of all spending time with MrB, family, & friends. Sadly it is no longer what it was, as suddenly and unexpectedly I became a widow.

  1. These are so beautiful. We are back in Spain and I’ve seen the processions this evening. Thank goodness it didn’t rain! It is so interesting to have such a different perspective on Christmas. We will have our last feast tomorrow with friends! Glad you are enjoying the Portuguese customs too.

  2. Tempting fate this year and leaving mine up 🙂 If I still have the energy I will take them down tomorrow evening, after my Polish visitors have been. I so wanted them to see my place looking pretty 🙂
Love these scenes from the Olhao library, Becky 🙂 Booked our next flight from 1st Feb.

    1. I know the house looks so bare when they come down.
Fabulous news about 1st – hopefully by then the squalls will have stopped!

        1. I know, I know I shouldn’t complain at the occasional squall especially when it is sunny and brilliant blue skies as I write this!!
We’re popping back this weekend to sort a few things – just wondering if we should catch a seaplane 😉
Stay dry and safe Jo x

  3. Those are some of the best Christmas decoratives I have ever seen!

Happy New Year to you, your family and friends 🙂

    Love and light <3

    Anand 🙂

    1. Likewise!
And a very Happy New Year to you and your family 😊
Apologies I’ve been out of touch for a while, hope to catch up later this month.
