An unexpected surprise in Tavira yesterday

DSCN1717As you will know from previous posts we love visiting Tavira. It is such a pretty town, and when we have visitors we almost always take them there. Yesterday it was just the two of us, we fancied lunch out and as it was a tad cloudy thought Tavira the perfect place for a mooch before.

DSCN1711After strolling both sides of the Rio Gilão and a little bit of  Rio Séqua we stopped for a Galão and Chá Verde in an excellent patisserie. We resisted the cakes, still not sure how and then headed up as usual towards the castle. On our way back down we heard music coming from Church of Misericórdia de Tavira, and so peeped inside.

It was the first time we had seen the doors open and were delighted by what we saw inside. It was however the music that was the unexpected surprise. You can see him in the first picture; a pianist rehearsing.

He was superb, and surrounded by the glorious blue 18th century tiles we sat and listened for quite a while. I took a few seconds of video which give you (if the videos work!) a taste of what he was playing and if you have found me via Cate’s Six Word Saturday a musical interlude to your day.

If the videos don’t work or you happen to be in the Tavira anytime soon then do look out for Music in Churches. If the other musicians are as good as this young man then the evenings must be amazing. We’ll certainly be back for a performance soon.

It had been a good life walking, cooking, photographing, volunteering, blogging, and best of all spending time with MrB, family, & friends. Sadly it is no longer what it was, as suddenly and unexpectedly I became a widow.

  1. what a wonderful post and I wish you had done a longer video of the pianist. Really awesome in the truest sense of the word. We will be in Porto in the next week and Olhao shortly after that. I love Portugal and can’t wait to get back there. Can you tell me – are the flamingos around at the moment in the salt flats near the town?

    1. So do I now!!
And yes they have been most days. I’ve got a post on them coming up next week so watch this space 😊

      1. Great I will look out for it. such an inspiring place. I just blogged about recent paintings inspired by Porto. And really looking forward to absorbing the beauty of Olhao later this month.

  2. He’s superb! Must be one of the Academy’s star pupils! 🙂 Having said that, the standard is always pretty high for Music in the Churches. I didn’t go to one last trip but we usually do. It’s good to support them, if you can 🙂 🙂

    1. Unfortunately going to miss tonight’s as having to nip back to England for a few days. Definitely though will make one of the others this month 😊

  3. So good to have a surprise ! Trevor and some other friends have been to some. I have still to be there at the right time! We enjoyed the small live fado museum but perhaps it’s only on in the summer .
