An unforgettable sunrise in the Algarve

Nancy of Nancy Merrill Photography is right most of us tend to photograph sunsets rather than sunrises. I guess it isn’t surprisingly since sunsets we can stumble across whereas a sunrise is for most of us a special effort.

I am an early riser so it is not too much of an effort for me. When we are in Olhão I simply take a peep outside as I make my morning cuppa, and if it looks good off I trundle with my camera. Which probably explains why this is my third post on them! If you have missed the other two you can find them here and here.

This sunrise was a mid winter one. What fascinated me was how quickly the colours were changing; only 7 minutes lapsed between the first and the last photograph. And I have presented the photographs in the order I took them! The only variation as I snapped was that I occasionally used the flash.

In England it is said ‘Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning’, apparently taken from the Gospel of St Matthew. There are variations around the world, with the most common change being sailor for shepherd. It is a weather saying that can be true, IF, you live somewhere where the weather predominantly arrives from the west. So generally works in the UK but possibly not in the Algarve.

Unfortunately I never got to see the end as we had to rush off to the airport that morning, and so I also have no idea how the day turned out. It certainly began beautifully though. For more stunning sunrises why not visit Nancy.dscn3238

  2. As Dina said, no two sunrises or sunsets are the same. I am more of a sunset person, but looking at these photos I am determined to climb that hill and catch at least one sunrise this winter! These are fabulous colours and especially that last shot.

    1. Think might be my favourite too as the colours were just extraordinary, I was so annoyed though we had to leave to catch a plane!

  5. Beautiful colors, Becky! In sailor’s jargon, they say “Red skies at night, sailors’ delight. Red skies in the morning, sailors take warning!” 🙂 I don’t see sunrises frequently anymore, since we have been off our sailboat, for the reason you mention: it takes so much effort! That being said, I saw an amazing one yesterday morning, but I didn’t have my camera with me to prove it…
