Monday Portrait

The Common Ringed Plover, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira in Portuguese, is one of the most common waders we see in the salt pans and coastal marshes. Whilst seen year round in Portugal, their numbers increase significantly in the winter months due to both migrating and wintering ones. This is either a juvenile or an adult in winter plumage as the black collar is incomplete. Distinguished from other plovers by the yellow ring round its eyes.

It had been a good life walking, cooking, photographing, volunteering, blogging, and best of all spending time with MrB, family, & friends. Sadly it is no longer what it was, as suddenly and unexpectedly I became a widow.

  1. Put your shot on high magnification, and cannot discerne the yellow ring.
But the way, egrets paddle their feet, to disturb food.
Plenty in UK, but usually in estuaries.

        1. I am booked to chat to Cee (usual zoom link) at 5pm today if you are free, even to pop your head in for a few minutes

    1. It is isn’t it – more will follow of other waders once I’ve settled back into English life. Journey hassle free but always feels longer coming back!

    1. You will have but usually they’re mixed up with all the other small waders, so you may not have distinguished them from the other plovers

  2. Beautiful! We had such a good day at Ludo last Friday. We were walking with a couple of experienced birders and it made such a difference. A purple galinule and glossy ibis we almost certainly wouldn’t have spotted on our own.
