Tavira – a must visit

Portugal 163

Last year I shared how much we liked Tavira…….well we still love this pretty town! And we are not the only ones – check out this lovely blog by restless Jo, where she describes one of her walks through the town.  Another good blog to find out more on this wonderful town is Tavira Today.

Tavira is best explored on foot, and of course the view of the rooftops from the castle is an essential.  If here for more than a day or on a return visit there is the Municipal Museum and Tavira Island, or you can do what we always do which is take a long lunch after a short wander! There are cafes and restaurants everywhere, those near the market and square can be busy on a sunny day as Tavira is one of the busier places in the east.  However even on a warm day you can find a quiet yet excellent place to eat – all you need do is turn down a side street and follow the locals.

As well as finding new places to eat, we’ve recently discovered a fabulous haberdashery, it is in the row of shops opposite the market and has wonderful tablecloths, bag holders and other great gifts. Better prices and selections than most of the gift shops, and absolutely charming owners.

We tend to drive to Tavira now and have even got our heads around the one way system. There is also though an excellent train service, see my links page for more details. In fact it’s probably about time we caught the train again as we have such a great time on the comboios and the journey from Olhão is much prettier by train.
