An evening stroll before dinner is one of our favourite things to do, and when sun sets after 6:30pm and the restaurants don’t serve before 7pm in the evenings, it is also a very sensible thing to do!
Of course the light is better in the mornings for bird identification but the beauty of the birds at sunset is truly something to behold in the Ria Formosa. Whilst we are out walking this evening here are a few of my favourite shots for you, I hope, to enjoy.
Flamingos in Olhão’s saltpans with waders in flightPlovers, Dunlins and others all settling down for the night. The noise is incredible.Grey Plovers, Dunlins, Blank-Winged Stilts and Black Tailed Godwits – recently arrived and tired.Black Winged Stilts are a common sight in Olhão. They, like the Green Shanks, are one of the ‘alarm’ birds and so just occasionally you find yourself going ssh at them!Looking particularly pink these FlamingosThe waders move across the skies in huge numbers, and yet sometimes as they turn they can disappear into the skyThey look almost like ghosts in this light, and if you look carefully you can see another flock in the distance. This was taken in late October from the Armona ferry.The way the light fell across the saltpan with the waders on the bank caught my attention, and then I realised there were Red Shanks flying pastFlamingo in Silhouette with a duck following!
