Have you walked through this ‘gigantic’ door?

The average height of the Portuguese may be a few centimetres shorter than most Europeans, but their Church doors don’t seem to recognise that. Like many church doors this one is big, and from some angles it looks gigantic! It certainly caught my eye the other day and as it has been quite a while since I participated in Thursday Doors I thought it perfect for today’s entry.

The door is the main door to the splendid Igreja da Ordem Terceira do Carmo de Tavira. This church is one of over 30 in Tavira; the large number reflecting the wealth in Tavira in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Work on Igreja do Carmo commenced in the mid 18th century and took 43 years to complete. Work on the adjacent convent took place at the same time, and had not been completed by the the time religious orders were disbanded in the early part of the 19th century. It is not just this door which catches your eye though when you stand in Largo do Carmo, there’s also the gate to your right which takes you to the south entrance that the faithful would have used to enter the church. For more on this church and others in Tavira visit Tavira Today, and if you have walked through this door do let me know!
