I’ve got no idea when we will be returning to the Algarve, possibly in March for a short trip if the vaccines happen in January. Until then however it is a case of looking back through the archives remembering past adventures, and I thought using monochrome to recall days gone by might be rather appropriate. The bonus of course it also means I can submit this post for Jude’s final B&W challenge.

In the 16th and 17th centuries Tavira was an incredibly important port and fishing hub, however the fisherman and merchants were fighting a losing battle with the river. It was gradually silting up and, despite their best efforts throughout the 18th century, by the 19th century it was no longer a thriving merchant port.

However the splendid houses such as the Palácio da Galeria. and multiple churches, there are more than 20, remain, and it remains the best place in the Algarve to see wonderful hipped roofs, known locally as the ‘Telhados de Quatro Águas’. Not only are these roofs a great architectural feature but they also enable ‘free air circulation in rooms, making them cooler in summer and warmer in winter by keeping the cold away’.

Stunning photos for Jude’s challenge. How’s your fish bone?
Thanks Cee 😊
Unfortunately still there, think it might be working its way out though as been stabbing me throughout the day!
Love that top shot..
Thank you so much 🙂
The roof idea sounds excellent, maybe a reason modern buildings don’t work so well. Love the first image, gorgeous tree. One day I’ll get there. Maybe not next year though. I think we have a fair way to go yet before travelling is safe.
It is such a brilliant idea, and such a shame so many refurbishments are replacing them with modern. The modern builder and architect is daft!
And that’s my favourite too, and yes fingers crossed we are all travelling again in a relaxed way by 2022. I think we will be, once the vaccines start rolling out I think things will improve pretty quickly for most of us.
Lovely monochrome photos Becky. Oh how I wish the vaccine will be successful.
Thank you :-), and yes so do I!
Ahhh… to travel again!
I know!

Looks lovely in B&W Becky 🙂
thanks Brian
Oh to be there…

Can’t wait to get back! So missing the markets, especially the fish, not to mention the sun!
Exactly!
Free air circulation keeping That Virus at bay too? Fabulous shots. No wonder you love your home-from-home.
hee hee now there’s a thought!
Fabulous! Home from home 🙂 🙂 Thanks, darlin!
