We hope by the spring to have returned to our beloved Algarve, but know realistically it could be the autumn before we can make the journey. So over the coming weeks (and months) whilst we ponder our return I thought I would look back in my archives and share some of posts from previous years. Each time I will always share a new photograph, linked to the post and inspired by a blogging challenge.
Today I am taking you to the Alentejo Steppe, inspired by Brian and Trish. It is thanks to them I have discovered Lisa’s wonderful challenge for the week; ‘Birds with Long Wingspans‘. Perfect for taking another look at one of the largest birds I have ever seen the Abutre-preto (Eurasian Black Vulture). At first I thought I was looking at storks, and I was, but then I realised one of them was far more rectangular in shape and also enormous. I’ve created a photo montage so you can experience that moment too.
More formally known as the cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), it has a wingspan of up to 3.1metres. That’s 10ft2 but even with that enormous length it is still only no11 on the list of birds with the largest wingspans! Do click below to visit my original post and find out more about this bird which is critically endangered because of human activity.
The largest I have seen is the Californian Condor with a wingspan of 3m. Majestic birds.
oh I am so envious you have seen a Condor, they are extremely rare. Think they were even extinct in the wild for a while, thank goodness for conservation groups who have brought them back
This is a cool post! Wow, that’s one huge bird!!
thank you so much, and yes they really are!

so glad you like the video, I am very tempted to keep the subscription going for the software I use as i am finding it a great way to share the multiple photos I often take of the same thing!
